Here’s a glass and wood amulet I created, it’s been wire wrapped with copper and set onto a bronze tone chain. I chose the colour green for my amulet for it’s connection with renewal and life itself.
Amulets, talismans and good luck charms have been widely valued in societies around the world throughout history, across different cultures and religions.
They were said to offer protection against negative influences and were thought to carry healing properties to the wearer. Derived from the Latin word amuletum. Amulet’s were often kept as ornaments, hung above the entrance of the dwelling or inside the home. They would be placed close to a person or worn on the body to ward off any evil, mischief and disease. They were thought to ensure prosperity and to transfer a positive and magical energy to the owner.
Amulets could be natural or man made, of metal, mineral, shell or animal with the greatest importance being placed on their healing and protective powers. They were often adorned with gems and worn in the form of necklaces, rings and bracelets; the circle representing wholeness, unity and infinity.
Some amulets had printed mystical scrolls placed inside them with written incantations or symbols.
An example of an amulet from the last 100 years or so could be a St Christopher, a Nazar (the eye shaped amulet) to ward off the Evil Eye, or the carrying of a lucky coin or rabbit’s foot.
Today amulets still hold great significance to people as they did in yesteryear; although their form may have changed, the sentiment behind them remains the same.
